Watch, as I turn this pile of wood into a fireplace-shaped bookshelf.
DIY FTW!
*Update* As some of you have noticed I still need to put in shelves, but I’m so close to finished I couldn’t wait to share it.

My “outline” is nowhere near finished, but I have to start writing.
I should have enough of it done by Wednesday to start in on the story itself.
Based on this experiment I’m not convinced that outlining is the way to go for me. Even though I’m sure the benefits of it will be apparent once I actually start writing, I feel like it’s taking forever to get to the pen-on-paper part.
I’ve discovered that you could literally outline a story for years …

I finally put together that factory cart coffee table. I still have to add the wheels and stain it, but I’m way too excited about it to wait until then to show it.
It’s kind of amazing how satisfying making something can be. It was a pile of wood and now it’s a table.
Win.

Well, more like fixed.
7 cans of spray paint, fabric, a lot of staples, and a little bit of time; creates an awesome table set.
I wish I could say it’s perfect but I accidently upholstered two of the seats sideways…
And I’m ok with that.
You can’t tell and, I’m really not all that OCD.
Next up, factory cart coffee table.

That’s exactly what you think it is: a new writing notebook. It’s official; I’ve started writing again. 500 words a day to start. A very modest goal but it doesn’t matter.
I spent a lot of time last week thinking about why I stopped. Which took me back to why I started.
I first realized I wanted to become an author when I was at my last gig. I won’t say anything about it other than I wasn’t happy there. Then, out …

I found my first 100% diy project. I don’t know why I love this wheeled coffee table, but I do. And according to the plans it’s only going to cost me $50 and a little bit of first-time-builder’s pain.
Not sure what’s gotten into me but I’ve become a craft maven lately. I’m taking sewing classes. I’m going to reupholster my dining room set today. I’ve got primer and a number of things to paint around the apartment, and now this …

I’ve decided to put Priscilla Long’s theory of productivity to the test. She believes that most of the artists and writers we think of as geniuses, may have been geniuses, but that it’s more likely they just out-worked everyone else around them. They had more duds, but they also had more successes.
Now, I don’t expect this experiment to turn me into the Picasso of writing, but I do think it will be interesting to see how it affects my writing.
I …

The second Writing Brothers meeting is today. I’ve collected a few more members and so far it’s going well.
I didn’t get as much writing done as I had wanted to this weekend, but I finished the assignment I had with my group.
You can read it here.

I don’t read classic literature.
Scratch that.
I don’t read classics unless I have to. But when I see some sitting alone on a bookshelf I’m suddenly filled with guilt. And a determined, novel sized voice shouts, “I’m an important piece of American literature, pay attention to me, damn it!”
This happens about once a year, which is why I’m currently reading The Bell Jar. Not bad. Great use of description, but I really wish someone would pull out a time machine, or …

I’m still working on the site, but it’s pretty much done!
www.writingbros.com
I’ve decided that the first meeting is going to be on May 18th at the local library. Not a very stimulating location, but I figure it’s a good neutral place to start.
I still can’t believe I’m doing this. But it feels good to take charge of something instead of just joining. And I know it’ll be helpful. It’s hard to be lazy when people are counting on you.

Assignment:
Describe a barn as seen by a man whose son has just been killed in a war. Do not mention the son, or the war, or death. Do not mention the man who does the seeing.
Length: One page – whatever you feel like
This is from John Gardner’s book The Art of Fiction. I figured since I’m reading it I might as well do the exercises. I’ll probably do mine before bed tonight since I have a lot of paid writing …

The Writing Bros. logo is complete! Thanks to the lovely Claire.
I’m really pleased with the way it turned out. Not something I would have thought of myself, which is usually a good thing when it comes to me and art direction.
Now all I have to do is post flyers, build the website, and SHAZAM… I’ll have a speculative fiction writing group.

(the post title is a bit graphic, but it fits)
So far it’s going well. I’ve decided to stick with the title Writing Bros. even though (as some have suggested) it doesn’t scream speculative fiction. But I like it, and it works. Carries the tone of community that I want, and I could honestly spend a year just thinking about the title instead of actually making the group so it’s better to just move on.
I’ve written up the copy for the …

Writing Bros.
It’s the name of my speculative fiction writing group.
Remember how I was whining about having to start my own group? Well I’m not anymore; I’m actually really excited. I’ve already found my first member, commandeered the domain name, and set up the gmail account.
And after I write this post I’m going write up some advertisements for the local community boards. Then all I have to do is decide how I’m going to brand/structure the group. That way if I decide …

So I’m altering the short story project so it’s more beneficial. Instead of just writing a short story, I’m going to write one geared towards a magazine.
I think getting something published would be a step in the right direction, and even though I’ve been in advertising magazines I don’t think it counts.
I’ll keep you posted on what happens.

I’ve decided on a doable project.
I’m going to write a short story every two weeks.
I’ve never written a short story. Or at least not since I decided to be a writer. I don’t think it’ll take that long but I’m giving myself extra time just in case. I’m going to shoot for about 4,000 words, which is like 15 pages. Depending on how much this distracts from actual novel writing, I’ll either increase or decrease the time in-between each …

So, I decided to start my B5 project today; the one where I deconstruct the Babylon 5 series in an effort better understand multiple point of view story telling.
I started with the overall Story Question:
When a series of events sets the Shadow War in motion, the crew of Babylon 5 sets out to stop the war and the Shadows. But will they succeed when they find themselves pitted against two ancient Alien forces, internal betrayal, and a corrupt Earth government?
It …

So I really want to learn the nuts and bolts of third person point of view, particularly multiple point of view story telling.
If you’re just starting out and you haven’t read Jim Butcher’s blog, you should. It’s has a lot of information on story craft. I wish I had found it before I had written my book, would have saved myself a lot of time.
Anyways, using some techniques outlined there, I’m going to deconstruct episodes from the Babylon 5 …
