Story Structure
I’ve been trying to transform myself into an outline writer. It hasn’t really been working. But I found some videos on youtube today that have renewed my faith.
Dan Wells, the guy who wrote I am Not a Serial Killer, goes over some basic story structure. It’s makes outlining look easy, instead of tedious and boring.
Try to ignore the bad 90’s elevator music. It only lasts for about 30 seconds.
Also, that person in the audience who is insisting that Othello kills Iago is annoying me. Iago is the instigator and lives to tell the story of Othello and Desdemona. They obviously haven’t read it nor seen the play.
Right now I’m stuck in between discovery writing and outlining. It’s funny that you like outlining more. I’ve always felt that making the characters was the easier part.
All you have to do is write how people talk, and the dialogue sort of takes care of itself. You should check out this podcast. I found it really helpful:

I find it best to ignore people like that. Plus, there’s always a chance they were just trying to be cute.
Also, you can dissect the dialogue of other authors. If you read something you really like, study it and figure out how they did it.
back to watching this again…. hmm….
Heh… Wait until you see what I post tomorrow. It’s another bit of something you’ll find yourself going back to.
Sometimes I feel like I’m trapped in writing monsoon. So much information, so many different ways to drown.

We should team up! All I ever write is outlines.
The worst part of writing for me is writing all the nitty gritty details, building characters into believable people, getting inside their heads and making them real, dialogue, etc.
It’s so painstakingly hard for me, because I want to make it all seem like it was something that could really happen. Which is a challenge when you’re talking about 10ft tall squid-people, or GMO farm animals that transmit parasitic larvae via fruit.
